The Mumbai Police on Thursday filed a 733-page chargesheet against bookie Anil Jaisinghani, his daughter Aniksha and cousin brother Nirmal in connection with an extortion case filed by Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

According to police sources, the three accused have been charged under sections 385 (extortion) and 120 (B) (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code along with sections 8 and 12 of Prevention of Corruption Act. The chargesheet was submitted by assistant commissioner of police Ravi Sardesai at Special ACB court in South Mumbai.

“During the course of investigation, statements of about 13 key witnesses were recorded. They have been included in the chargesheet,” an officer said. The investigators have also scanned call data records and bank accounts of the three accused, officers said.

Police also probed deep into the properties belonging to Jaisinghani that are said to be located within and outside the state.

On Amrita Fadnavis’ complaint, the Malabar Hill police had on February 20 filed a case of conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.

The FIR states that Aniksha initially offered to provide information to Amruta Fadnavis on some bookies, through which they could allegedly earn money and then directly offered Rs 1 crore to get her (Aniksha’s) father off the hook in a police case.

In the FIR, Amruta Fadnavis said that on February 18 and 19, Aniksha sent her video clips, voice notes and many messages from an unknown phone number. Along with her father, the woman was indirectly “threatening and conspiring” against her, Amruta Fadnavis said in the FIR.

The case was registered against Aniksha, who allegedly posed as a clothes, jewellery and footwear designer to get close to the deputy chief minister’s wife and her father.

During the course of investigation, when police came to know that the woman and her father tried extorting Rs 1 crore from Amruta, section 385 (extortion) was added to the FIR.

“The section on extortion was added only after we found relevant evidence,” said a senior police officer.

While Aniksha was arrested on March 16, Anil and his cousin Nirmal were arrested from Godhra district in Gujarat on March 19.
