Second seed Rhys Albuquerque suffered a shock defeat in the youth boys' quarter-finals of the Matunga Gymkhana 4-Star All Mumbai Table Tennis Tournament on Monday.

Second seed Rhys Albuquerque suffered a shock defeat in the youth boys’ quarter-finals of the Matunga Gymkhana 4-Star All Mumbai Table Tennis Tournament on Monday.

Unseeded Shubham Ambre,who was suffered an upset himself at the hands of Albuquerque in the junior boys quarter-finals on Sunday,avenged his defeat with a riveting 4-3 win. Albuquerque recovered from 1-3 to force the decider where he went down in a close finish.

Later,Ambre halted sixth seed Jignesh Rahatwar’s run with another tight 3-2 win in the sub junior quarter-finals after enjoying a 2-0 lead.

In the same category,fifth seed Shaurya Pednekar rallied from a 0-2 deficit to upset fourth seed Mandar Hardikar in another 3-2 thriller that ended in a nail-biting decider at 14-12.

Meanwhile,sub-junior girls’ top seed Ashlesha Trehan led the other favourites into the semi-finals.
