Additional cover for foreign diplomats,consulates

The Mumbai police on Tuesday increased the security cover for foreign diplomats and consulates in the city following a fresh security review conducted against the backdrop of the Israel embassy car blast in New Delhi on Monday. Senior officers said the decision followed a high-level meeting, and that security across consulates — especially the Israeli and US ones — has been beefed up.

Officers said the additional security cover provided to foreign diplomats based in the city could also be extended to their families if the police felt there was a security threat to them. They said the move,a precautionary measure, was being taken to avoid any untoward incident involving diplomats or consulates.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajnish Seth said,“We did conduct a security review of various consulates. The security cover for diplomats operating out of the city and also for consulates,in general, have been reviewed. Necessary precautions have been taken. We have to be vigilant.”

Another senior officer who did not wish to be named said the security at consulates of the US,Israel and some European countries had been given priority. “The blast in New Delhi targeted an Israeli diplomat. We have taken stock of the situation and have increased cover for Israeli diplomats and at its consulate. Since the general perception is that Israel and the US are both targets,we decided to increase cover for US diplomats too,” he said.

The officer said there was, however,no intelligence input about any possible threat. “This follows the Delhi blast. The city has been put on a state of alert as even the BMC polls are to be held on Thursday. We do not want to take any chances… Attacks like these (the Delhi blast) are difficult to prevent. In Mumbai’s traffic and crowded areas, such attacks will be very difficult to prevent unless there is a prior intelligence input. However,we are trying to ensure that such an attack does not happen in the city.”
