7 MNVS activists booked for assault on top MU official

A day after the Controller of Examination of Mumbai University was assaulted by Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena activists, the BKC police booked seven persons in the case on Wednesday.

A day after the Controller of Examination (COE) of Mumbai University (MU) was assaulted by Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) activists, the BKC police booked seven persons in the case on Wednesday. While one of them was arrested on Tuesday evening, the other six are still absconding, the police said.

On Tuesday evening, seven activists from MNVS’s Mumbai university unit went to COE Prof Vilas Shinde’s office at the varsity’s Kalina campus to discuss the Friday’s paper leak issue. Shinde, who was already in a meeting, took the group to the vice-chancellor’s chamber, where the group allegedly attacked him, blackened his face and ransacked the room.

However,Shinde resumed work the very next day. He said,“I am not a coward like them. I have a lot of important work to do. I could have easily ignored them or would have asked them to wait as I was in a meeting. But I decided to address their query first. They insulted and assaulted me instead. They had no intention of discussing any issue. They had come well prepared to harm me. They got ink bottles with them and within few minutes, they locked the door, covered my mouth and started beating me up. When I shouted for help, they tried to escape, but I managed to nab their leader Sainath Durge, who was later handed over to the police by our security,” Shinde said.

Meanwhile,MNVS activists claim they do not regret Tuesday’s incident and said Shinde deserved it. A senior MNVS activist said,“Students are suffering every minute, all because of Shinde and his weak administration. We don’t have any personal animosity against Shinde. We have been requesting him and the vice-chancellor to address the students’ issue for years now. We had even requested higher authorities to conduct an inquiry against Shinde, but no action was taken against him because he has a strong political backing.”

The BKC police have registered a case of damaging public property and assault against seven men. “We arrested Durge on Tuesday evening. He revealed the names of six others. They have been identified as Parshuram Tapase,Abhijit Bhosale,Chetan Pawar,Vilas Patil,Kiran Kadam and Jeevan Tambe,” said Senior Inspector Vinay Sawade of BKC police station.

Officers probing the case have pegged the total damages at Rs 3 lakh. “Property worth Rs 3 lakh was destroyed. The accused broke window panes, furniture and ransacked the office,” said Sawade.
