Many of the school vans run by private operators have been flouting traffic norms: majority of these vans do not carry the route boards, which they are supposed to place in front of the vans. It has been observed that the drivers of these vans neither wear uniforms nor do they carry any name plate; these vans also dont have attendants. Most of the time the vans are overloaded with children.
Mohan Lal,father of two school-going children, said: The van drivers increase their charges soon after a hike in oil prices, but they do not provide better facilities. Sometimes the vans are badly overcrowded and children have no place to sit.
Suman Sharma, another parent, said: Almost every week, the drivers complain that children keep fighting with each other. When we pay Rs 550 to van drivers for the month, they should arrange an attendant for controlling children. We are ready to pay even Rs 600 per month if they provide the facilities.
Meanwhile,Ashwani Kumar,District Transport Officer,Ludhiana, said: We keep penalising violators; every month,we issue 50-60 challans to school vans and buses. Despite this, the van drivers do not bother to obey rules and regulations.
We have also held meetings with principals of some reputed schools and have requested them to arrange their own transportation. In case they are not interested in starting their transport facility, they should tell private transporters to follow rules. We will intensify our struggle against violators.
