Private school van owners to strike work from today

Continuing with their partial strike, private school van owners will be on a full fledged indefinite strike from Friday.

Continuing with their partial strike, private school van owners will be on a full fledged indefinite strike from Friday. On Thursday, only a few school van owners, especially in Jamalpur, were on strike, but after an unsuccessful meeting with Anil Kumar Garg,District Transport Officer (DTO),the drivers decided to continue the strike on Friday.

On Wednesday, five vans were detained because they did not possess the necessary documents. While issuing safety regulations for school vans, the DTO asked private van operators to get documents like pollution certificate, insurance of vehicle, permission certificate from school, fitness check of vehicle, drivers’ license and due payment of tax. Operators have also been directed to not carry more than 20 children in a van.

“We do not earn much and so cannot spend to fulfill all these conditions. Safety of children is our priority as well, but can’t abide by all the norms stated by the DTO,” said Darshan Sabharwal, president of School Vans Operators Association. He added that around 4,000 operators will be on strike across the city from Friday.

Anil Kumar Garg, district transport officer, said,“Safety of children is at stake,so I cannot compromise on any of the conditions. We want all documents,if vans want to ferry children.”

Amid all the hassle, parents and children are a harried lot. “Its quite difficult to leave office mid-way and pick my daughter from school, but vans should fulfill the norms put by the DTO,as it pertains to the safety of our kids,” said Rita Mehta,a parent.
