In order to tighten its noose around maverick students who indulge in ragging, students who aspire to take admission in the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will have to give an undertaking that they will not indulge in any such activity. Their parents, too, have been asked to give it in writing that their wards will refrain from ragging.
The move has been made mandatory for all studentsseeking admissions in the university. Nevertheless, parents who come to submit the forms of their wards, rue that all formalities can be completed once the student makes it to the university and not before that.
The university, meanwhile, has stated that the student and his/her parents should submit a declaration that they all have read the rules and instructions regarding ragging.
The affidavit, moreover, has to be signed by a first or second class magistrate.
Harsimrat Singh,a resident of Muktsar who had come to submit his sons form, said,This is sheer harassment. First let my son get admission. I am ready to give the undertaking but that is required at a later stage.
Another parent added,What I cannot understand is why the affidavit is not being taken from the second year and other senior students .
PAU Registrar Dr R K Mahey said,We are simply following the guidelines laid down by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The Supreme Court is very strict about this issue and hence we cannot default anywhere. Moreover,it is these first year students who later become seniors.
