Open school candidate gets ‘internal assessment’ marks

A school here has alleged that Punjab School Education Board,Mohali committed a mistake by awarding internal assessment to an open school candidate.

A school here has alleged that Punjab School Education Board,Mohali committed a mistake by awarding internal assessment to an open school candidate. The class X student of first semester had appeared as an Open School candidate in September 2010.

Talking to The Indian Express,a teacher of Everest Model Senior Secondary School,Moti Nagar, said,“Rupinder Pal Singh,a class X student of Open School system, appeared in the first semester exam of class X from our school. But to our surprise,we were sent his result like a regular candidate’s. The student was awarded internal assessment in all the six subjects, that is,Punjabi,Hindi, mathematics, science, social studies and English. However, any candidate who appears as a private or as an open school candidate is not awarded internal assessment.”

The teacher said,“We called up the Punjab School Education Board,Mohali,14 times but did not get a satisfactory answer. And after some days,Rupinder received the detailed marks card in a different way. He was issued the DMC showing the total of internal assessment and marks obtained.”

However,Dalbeer Singh Dhillon,Chairman,PSEB,Mohali, said,“The Open School candidate is not given internal assessment. For each subject there are 100 marks. For all (regular /private/ open school) candidates,we conduct exam of 70 marks. And the regular candidates are given internal assessment out of the remaining 30 marks. However, the Open School candidates are given proportionate marks on the basis of marks obtained by them. In Rupinder Pal Singh’s case also, these are not the marks of internal assessment but proportionate marks out of the remaining 30 marks.”

When asked why these have been written under the column of internal assessment,he said,“It seems that this student might have been issued a DMC separately,so the concerned person, who issued the DMC,did not add proportionate marks in the marks obtained and wrote them separately, which caused confusion. ”
