Ludhiana Member of Parliament Manish Tewari met agitating jewellers on Saturday and assured them to take back their protest as Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is seized of the matter and is looking for means to solve the problems being faced by the jewelers.

Speaking to the jewellers at Fountain Chowk,Tewari said,“The Finance Minister understands the issues of the jewellers. However, the matter is concerned with revenue generation of the nation. Hence,he is meeting other ministers and working on avenues so that the interests of the jewellers are also maintained as the fiscal health of the nation is also not compromised. Thus,I will request the protesting jewellers to open up their shops and resume their work.”

Jewellers’ Forum President Anand Sikri informed,“We have turned down the request of the member parliament for we have learnt that the Union Government is just giving us false hopes and promises.”

“It is treating us just the way it treated Anna Hazare but we will not fall for the sops offered by the UPA government. We will not withdraw our agitation till the time the Centre actually withdraws its customs duty hike and consumer tax,” added Sikri.
