PCCTU teachers to observe two-hour strike today
The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union ( PCCTU ) has intensified its agitation against college managements for not implementing the new pay scale. In line with their demands,they will observe a two-hour strike on February 10 and 18. In many colleges,rallies will be held where the ‘biased and condemnable attitude of the managements’ will be exposed.

Prof Vinay Sofat,Finance Secretary,PCCTU,said though the managements of over seven colleges had implemented the new pay scales,some short-sighted managements had been unnecessarily harassing teachers for the last four years.

Diabetes and hypertension cause kidney problems,warns expert
Uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure can affect kidneys. This was stated by Dr Anu Trehan,Consultant in Acute Medicine at Salford Royal University Teaching Hospital,the UK,while speaking at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday.

She further said chronic kidney disease usually caused no symptoms in its early stage. “Only lab tests can detect any developing problems. Anyone at the increased risk for chronic kidney disease should be routinely screened for development of this disease through urine,blood,and imaging tests for early detection of disease,” she said.

‘MCI will soon introduce health facilities for rural areas’
Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh,Professor of the Urology & Transplant Surgery and Head of Transplant Unit at DMCH,who had recently attended a workshop on alternate model of undergraduate medical education in New Delhi,said,”The Government of India plans to introduce alternate undergraduate medical education.”

He said the degree of Bachelor of Rural Health Care (BRHC) will be granted to students trained at medical schools. These medical schools will be located at civil hospitals and admissions will be made district-wise for student qualifying Class XII examination from the notified rural area. “

PAU students excel at national level
The PAU mime team,consisting of six students,Amit Kumar Ray,Rohit Dixit,Sahil Saklany,Pardeep Kumar,Jatin Pabby and Piyush Behl,got the second position at the Inter-University National Youth Festival held from February 2 to 6 at Maharishi Dayanand University,Rohtak. PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang appreciated the efforts of PAU students and congratulated the participants for bringing laurels to PAU.

President’s special award for vet university professor
Dr Lachhman Das Singla,Associate Professor,Department of Veterinary Parasitology,Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU),has been conferred the President’s special prize for excellence in poster presentation at the annual conference of the Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists. During the conference,he had presented his research work on,“Enzyme histochemistry of caecal coccidiosis in poultry”.

Tree heritage park at PAU
The surroundings of museum of Social History of Punjab on the PAU campus will have a heritage park full of traditional plants. This was stated by PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang on Tuesday. He said the park will be known as Dr M S Swaminathan Park and will have more than 50 types of traditional trees representing the heritage of Punjab.

4-day Shivratri fest from Feb 12
The four-day Shivratri festival will be celebrated from February 12 to february 15 at Mandir Shri Neelkantth Mahadev constructed at Singla Enclave on Pakhowal Road. Disclosing this,Tarsem Lal Singla and Narinder Bansal said,” All preparations are complete for the celebrations. On February 15,MP Manish Tewari will inaugurate the ceremony while Dr Parveen Togadia,General Secretary,Vishaw HIndu Parishad,will lay the foundation stone of the residence of the caretaker of the temple.”
