Small scale units in Shimlapuri to start protest next week
Over 7,000 small scale units in Shimlapuri and adjoining areas will sit on dharnas and hunger strike in the coming week. As per the proposed master plan,these areas have been kept as residential and hence no industry would be allowed to operate from the area. At present,more than 70 per cent of the operate from the area. They had been demanding to include it in mixed land use area,but their requests have been turned down.

Gurwant Singh,president of small scale industrialists and traders association,said,“Earlier,we were being given assurances but now town planner has told that our request cannot be considered. So we have no choice but to protest.”

Sports meet concludes at Govt College
The 90th sports meet of the SCD Government College concluded here on Saturday. Jasbir Kaur Makkar,principal of the college,congratulated the winners. The events of the second day included 1500 mts race,400 mts race,100 mts race,long jump,high jump,discus throw,javelin throw,cycle race and three-legged race. On this occasion,Hira Singh Gabria,Cabinet minister,Punjab,was the chief guest.

Christians protest,hold up traffic near CMC
Reacting to the ‘controversial’ pictures of Jesus Christ,the members of the Christian community on Saturday sat on a dharna outside Kalvari Church and blocked traffic. The jam was continued till the time of filing of this report leaving the general public harrassed as all the roads leading to the CMC Hospital were blocked.

SHO Surinder Mohan said due to the traffic jam,commuters especially those going towards CMCH were taking detours due to which heavy congestion was seen in the entire old city area in the late evening.

National seminar held
A national seminar on “Global Trends in Education” was organised by Bhutta College of Education. Dr M S Kang,Vice-Chancellor of PAU,was the chief guest for the seminar.

Jagdish Singh Garcha,former technical education minister,presided over the function and Dr V K Sharma,Principal,Bhutta College of Engineering and Technology was the guest of honour.

Tension prevails in Laddowal village
Tension continued in Bongar Dogra village in Laddowal on Saturday where sarpanch Lakhwinder Singh had allegedly removed the flag of Ravidas religious community from a community centre. Lakhwinder along with two persons have been sent to judicial remand while the police force was deputed in the village to avoid any untoward incident. SHO Devinder Singh Gurjarsaid,”The situation is under control but still our teams have been deputed in the village.”
