As a dozen terrorists went on a rampage in Mumbais posh areas last year killing over 150 people in coordinated attacks on Taj Mahal Palace,The Oberoi Hotel and a busy VT train station, one mind in the city became highly restless. How can the youth of today play a key role in a society living under terror threats all the time was the question she asked.
In reaction to the tragedy,Jalnidh Kaur, who is studying in Class XII presently, decided to give her birthday celebrations a miss in December last year. She instead took on the responsibility to gather a momentum of ideas to avert such terror activities in future by way of forming pressure groups in order to shake the politicians out of their slumber.
I just wanted to do something on my part and, therefore, decided to hold my birthday as the pledge day with my friends and classmates, says Jalnidh, who had also been in the news for winning a free trip to the University of Hawaii,Manoa,Honolulu,USA,after her essay posted online had made it to the list of a few selected entries from around the world.
With a flair for writing and oratory, the daughter of a professor of journalism at PAU believes that very few people, let alone the youth of today, look upon themselves as the change agents, and fewer still have the will to finally turn into the change agents. To everyones surprise,Jalnidh had left everyone around her thinking when she opted for humanities instead of science which everyone was expecting, even though she had achieved 97 per cent marks in Class X.
Talking about her pressure group, she asserts,Apart from our group in the city which holds monthly meetings,my friends and I have formed a group on Facebook now and are connected to each other through the medium of Internet. We are doing our bit,it may be at a micro level though.
We hold regular discussions on the website and have now got like-minded group members from as far as Pune and Shillong, with only one objective that is to keep ourselves and our elders aware of what all of us should do to run the country properly.
I am also very much impressed by Professionals Party of India based in Bangaluru, started by professionals. It only means that we should all be doing our duty of being a citizen of the country rather than just availing ourselves of our rights, she says. We are the change agents of the society, the sooner we realise it,the better it is for our country.
