Instead of highlighting their respective agendas,SAD candidate Gurcharan Singh Galib and Congress nominee Manish Tewari are busy subjecting each other to name-calling.
While Galib terms Tewari as an outsider and a political novice,Tewari describes Galib as a non-performing asset (NPA) who did nothing in his two complete terms as the Member of Parliament (MP) from the city.
Tewari is an outsider and will vanish after the elections are over, said Galib while addressing an election meeting at Sham Nagar. He said people had no faith in Tewari because he was not seen in Ludhiana after losing the last general elections.
Galib further said,Frustrated,Tiwari has now raised the issue of my age, forgetting that the person (Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh) in whose name he is begging votes is also of my age. He must know that I was born in a village and have worked hard throughout my life. Even now,I get up at 5 am and work till 12 in the night. It appears that the Congress party in general and Manish Tewari in particular has little respect for their elders and their wisdom.
He further added that it shows that nomination of Dr Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister is a stop-gap arrangement to keep the post vacant for a young candidate. He further added that Tewari who is raising this issue claiming to be young at this moment already looked fatigued and exhausted and that too only within a fortnight of campaigning in the scorching heat.
Galib said that Tewari was a practicing lawyer in Delhi. Why should anyone believe in a person who does not belong to Ludhiana. I was born in this constituency and have spent my life serving the people of the area and will continue to do so. My slate is clean.
Meanwhile,Tewari today challenged Galib to list his three achievements during his long tenure in Parliament and politics. Tewari said that the issue was not the person but his performance or non-performance.
Tewari reiterated that if Galib can prove to him that he had spoken for even 10 seconds in the Lok Sabha during his two terms,he (Tewari) would withdraw his nomination in favour of Galib.
The Congress candidate asked Galib as to what he had done for Ludhiana. The real issue is performance, when you have been in Parliament for so long, you need to tell us what have you done for your people, Tewari asked Galib, while inviting him for an open debate on the issue.
Instead of highlighting his own agenda,Tewari also took a dig at the outgoing MP Sharanjit Singh Dhillon.
Citing the documents procured from Parliament under the Right to Information (RTI) Act,Tewari gave the details of the performance of the incumbent MP Dhillon, saying that like Galib,Dhillon also remained silent in Parliament for most of the time and virtually did nothing for the constituency.
That is the reason he ran away from contesting a second time, he observed, while adding,Otherwise it is unheard of in politics that a sitting MP will decline to contest.
Tewari said the Akalis had nothing to claim except their criminal record and the proof was their recent attack on his elderly mother with an intention to kill her. He said,Akalis have grown so desperate and so much frustrated that they have now started physically attacking women.
