Cochlear implant,which is a boon for children who are deaf and mute,can now be performed in Ludhiana. Deaf and mute children can be successfully treated by cochlear implant surgery and can live a normal life. The first such operation was performed at Deep hospital by Dr Rajeev Kapila.
Kashni Bhagat (6) who was deaf and mute had a cochlear implant operation in Deep Hospital on July 18. This has been done for the first time in private sector in Ludhiana,said Dr Baldeep Singh,Director of the hospital.
Children like Kashni were usually referred for cochlear implant to bigger cities like Delhi,but now they can get the same advantage in their own state in Ludhiana,he added. For children who are deaf since birth it should be done as early as possible. Younger patients show better results,parents must understand this and should not waste precious time. People who have developed profound hearing loss in later stages of life can also benefit from cochlear implant, said Dr Kapila.
