The Division number 7 police have booked former Punjab minister Malkiat Singh Birmi and about one dozen of his supporters in connection with the clash with the supporters of the District Congress Committee (DCC) president Jagmohan Sharma yesterday. Meanwhile,Birmi has denied the allegations levelled against him. He said that he was not even present at the venue when the clash took place.
According to police sources,Birmi, his aides Sanjay Sharma,Ravi Khwajke (both Congress leaders) along with about one dozen of their unidentified supporters have been booked in a case under sections 323 and 324 of the India Penal Code (IPC). These sections deal with causing hurt. However no arrest has been made so far in this case. This FIR has been registered on the complaint of an injured Congress worker Manpreet Singh Laddi, who was admitted to the CMC hospital after he sustained injuries in the clash yesterday.
On the other hand while addressing a media conference today,Birmi has rubbished the allegations levelled against him by the DCC president. Flanked by a number of Congress councillors,ex-councillors and other party leaders and workers,Birmi said that it were Jagmohan Sharma and his supporters who had attacked his (Birmis) workers without any provocation. I was not even present at the spot when this clash took place. While this clash occurred at 3.30 pm,I reached at the venue at 4.15 pm. By the time I reached there, everything was over, Birmi said.
Birmi, however, admitted to have a minor scuffle with the DCC president Sharma. Birmi said that this function had been organised by him so there was no question of him or his supporters creating a ruckus there. In fact,Sharma came there without any invitation and created a scene and he and his supporters attacked my workers. The allegations levelled by Sharma against me are false and politically motivated. I have brought this matter to the notice of the top leaders of my party and I am ready to face any inquiry, Birmi added.
