The BJP on Tuesday accused the UPA government at the Centre of shielding Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in a disproportionate assets case “for political gains”.

“The CBI has all evidences against Mayawati in the disproportionate assets case, but the matter is being hushed up. Actually the Congress is saving the Chief Minister,” BJP national vice-president Kalraj Mishra alleged during his Jan Swabhiman Yatra. He dubbed the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as the two sides of the same coin and alleged that

the BSP was looting the government’s money in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP leader said that the Mayawati government had failed to deliver services such as education, security and health.

Alleging a major scam in the National Rural Health Mission,he said expired medicines were supplied in government hospitals in Varanasi and Gorakhpur.

In Lucknow, party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the BJP had some reservations over the provision of right to recall as part of poll reforms in the country. “The BJP is working on poll reforms since last year but the party has reservations on the issue of right to recall,” Naqvi told reporters here. “As far as the right to recall is concerned, the time has gone when elections were held after a gap of five years, now an election or a bypoll is taking place after every six months in which people have the opportunity to recall,” he said.
