Three police constables and a sub-inspector in Uttar Pradesh were suspended by Agra Police Commissioner Pritinder Singh following charges that they tortured a 43-year-old man at their police outpost and gave false information of his death to his wife, who subsequently died by suicide in Nauni village late Monday night.

Hours after Anita Sharma (38) died by suicide, allegedly believing that her husband Manoj had died, locals demonstrated at Jagner police station in Agra on Tuesday morning. In a video that went viral, Manoj accused the police of torturing him at the police outpost after “abducting” him on fake charges of being involved in illegal betting in the ongoing IPL matches.

Manoj also lodged a complaint at Jagner police station Tuesday evening following which an FIR was lodged. However, none of the policemen was named accused in the report.

“I had clearly mentioned in my initial complaint that I was called out of my house by one Ravi Pachauri who owed a sum of Rs 20,000 to me and he asked me to collect my dues. When I came out of my house, I was abducted by four policemen who took me to the Sarendhi police outpost where they mercilessly beat me and threatened to implicate me in a fake case of illegal betting. They have also demanded Rs 2 lakh from me for my release,” claimed Manoj.

“Two persons, Ravi Pachauri and Kaki Parmar, have been arrested in this connection under IPC sections 362 (abduction) and 306 (abetment to suicide). The role of the policemen whom the complainant has accused of torture is being probed and action will be taken against them if they are found guilty in our inquiry. The policemen though have been suspended following the complaint,” said Sonam Kumar, deputy police commissioner, Agra.

Meanwhile, the family members of the arrested accused Pachauri have sent a letter to the chief minister’s office claiming that he has been made the scapegoat to save the policemen from the blame of torture and abetment to suicide. They have also claimed to have evidence that Pachauri was having dinner at a roadside eatery in Gwalior at the time.
