A thick blanket of fog engulfed Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday morning, prompting weather authorities to issue orange and yellow alerts across large parts of the state. Some districts such as Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj and Kanpur reported zero visibility.
The India Meteorological Department in Lucknow has issued an orange alert for ‘very dense fog’ in 13 districts of eastern and central Uttar Pradesh, while a yellow alert for dense fog has been sounded in 27 districts stretching from eastern to western UP.
The Met Department forecast dense to very dense fog for two days and, thereafter, dense fog for the subsequent two days.
Districts under the orange alert include Deoria, Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, Basti, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and Bareilly.
A yellow warning has been issued for Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Gazipur, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkarnagar, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Shahjahanpur, Sambhal and Badaun.
In Varanasi and Kanpur City, visibility was reduced to 40-50 metres.
Experts warned that very dense fog in these districts could affect traffic movement as well.
On Tuesday, low visibility owing to dense fog led to a deadly pile-up on the Yamuna Expressway that left 13 people dead.
Districts across the Eastern and Central belt as well as parts of West UP witnessed very dense fog in the early hours of Tuesday. Sources said several flights were delayed from Delhi due to low visibility, affecting the flight schedule at Lucknow Airport as well.
