UP: 2 days after headmaster’s ‘suicide’, BEO booked for abetment

The case was filed under IPC sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against Rao, the BEO for Kurwar block who on Wednesday was attached to the Basic Shiksha Adhikari's office. Rao is also facing a magisterial inquiry.

Station House Officer, Kurwar, G S Pal said, “A team has been formed. The post-mortem report was not conclusive and viscera has been preserved for further analysis.”

TWO DAYS after the headmaster of a government school died allegedly by suicide in Sultanpur district, a case was registered on Thursday against the local Block Education Officer (BEO) on the basis of a complaint by the family members of the deceased. They alleged that the headmaster, Surya Prakash Dwivedi (52), consumed a poisonous substance after he was “admonished” by BEO Manojit Rao, police said.

The case was filed under IPC sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against Rao, the BEO for Kurwar block who on Wednesday was attached to the Basic Shiksha Adhikari’s office. Rao is also facing a magisterial inquiry.

Dwivedi, who was the headmaster of a junior high school at Ravania Chitta village under Kurwar Block, allegedly consumed a poisonous substance on Monday evening and died during treatment at King George’s Medical University in Lucknow on Tuesday. Members of a teachers’ association, Dwivedi’s family members and some residents of the village alleged that the headmaster was driven to take the extreme step by BEO Rao and the family refused to cremate the body until an inquiry was ordered against him. The cremation was done on Thursday after the case was registered.
