Trader beheaded by friends,1 held

The beheaded body of Kanpur-based trader Sanjiv Gautam (25),who went missing on Sunday evening,was found on the outskirts of Munera village on Monday morning.

Acting on the FIR lodged by Gautam’s mother,Maya Devi,Chaubeypur police arrested Gautam’s friend Ram Babu Valmki,the main accused in the case. Two others named in the case,Chunnu Pandey and Som Kumar,are still absconding.

On Sunday evening,Gautam along with Valmiki,Pandey and Kumar had left the village to celebrate the weekend together. When Gautam did not return till late night,the family members started searching for him.

The villagers found the beheaded body on the village outskirts on Monday morning. Maya Devi said: “Gautam had informed me that he was going out with Valmiki,Pandey and Kumar. Therefore,I named them in the case.”

She denied any personal or professional rivalry. “Whenever Gautam found time during weekends,he went outside the village along with his friends,” she added.

The Chaubeypur police arrested Valmiki from his house in Munera village. On the information given by Valmiki,the police team found Gautam’s head lying in a field around a kilometre away from the village.

The sharp- edged weapon used for the murder is yet to be recovered by the police team.

Kanpur DIG Prem Prakash said: “Valmiki has confessed to the murder. Following a heated argument,he and his two friends murdered Gautam.”

After strangulating Gautam to death,the accused used an axe to behead him. The DIG maintained that the motive behind the murder is still unclear.

According to him,Gautam was a close friend of Valmiki,Pandey and Kumar,and the four often celebrated their weekends together.

“The statements made by Valmiki are confusing. We are yet to ascertain whether Gautam was murdered due to a sudden altercation or due to some old rivalry,” he added.
