Stalked, harassed by man, teen girl dies by suicide; accused held

Agra police on Monday said they have arrested the 23-year-old accused from Firozabad and booked him for abetment to suicide.

“We have arrested the man from Firozabad on charges of abetment to suicide. He has been sent to jail, while the body of the girl has been handed over to her family after the post-mortem examination,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Etmadpur) Ravi Kumar Gupta told The Indian Express.

According to the girl’s family, they moved from their native village in Firozabad district due to constant stalking and harassment by the man. “He (the stalker) used to follow her and forcibly stop her on way to school. As a result, she stopped going to school, and the family shifted to Agra a few months ago. But the man appeared at our new address and started stalking her again,” according to the FIR that was registered on a complaint lodged by the girl’s brother.

The brother also said that they had filed a complaint against the man at the local police station in Firozabad, but no action was taken, forcing the family to shift to Agra.

A few months ago, a Class 7 student in the same Agra police station area allegedly died by suicide after her friend’s father allegedly molested her. Acting on the complaint, police arrested the accused man. In another incident, a 17-year-old Class 11 student allegedly died by suicide at her house in Agra in March after she was harassed by a stalker, who reportedly threatened to kill her if she did not marry him. Police said they arrested the accused in the case.
