Samajwadi Party on Thursday revoked the suspension of Rajeev Rai,who was its face in TV debates during the election campaign, and reinstated him as national secretary and spokesperson.

Rai,a college owner based in Bangalore, was suspended immediately after the elections after he made some remarks in a TV programme about Azam Khan,a charge which he vehemently denies.

Hailing from Ballia,Rai was handpicked by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav during the election campaign and was entrusted with the responsibility of representing the party on English TV news channels. He was a visible face on the TV,hopping from one studio to another. His high visibility, however, caused discomfort to certain party leaders.

Even when he has been reinstated, state SP spokesperson Rajendra Choudhary said he had no information. Rai,who is presently in Bangalore, confirmed he had been reinstated. “I have received a letter from national general secretary Ramgopal Yadav reinstating me as national secretary and spokesperson of the party,” he said.
