Opting for a change in its approach towards its political rivals during the election campaigns, the Samajwadi Party has decided to do away with extreme negative campaign against its rivals and has decided to avoid personal attacks on any of the opposition leaders.
The most remarkable of this change is evident in the way partys state president Akhilesh Yadav avoids taking names of either Chief Minister Mayawati or Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi in his speech and mentions them mostly by their designations.
Showing black flag to any leader or taking names only highlights the person, making him an unnecessary hero. There is no point in personal attack against any leader, explained a party leader. Rahul or Sonia Gandhi is not synonymous to the Congress and Mayawati is not synonymous to the BSP. Taking their names means giving them credit for everything. That is why Yadav is criticising the partys policy in his speech and not any individual leader, he added.
Talking to The Sunday Express about deliberately avoiding negative criticism during his campaigns,Yadav said that his party holds a number of promises for people. People already know what Mayawati has done. Everybody knows she wasted peoples money to build statues,I do not need to tell them that. The Congress, meanwhile, has been making tall promises and not keeping them. I would rather tell the people what changes we will bring when voted to power, he said. He added that the party has a number of good things to focus on.
In fact, leaders in the party believe that a major cause behind the SP losing the Ferozabad Lok Sabla by-elections against the Congress in 2009 was negative criticism. We have learnt from the past that negative criticism does not make any party win an election. While the SP went criticising Raj Babbar in the campaigns for Dimple Yadav, the Congress candidate kept to a more positive campaign. The public realises the difference between negative criticism and positive campaign, and that is why the focus is now on positive campaign and the change SP promises to usher, rather than targeting any individual, said another party leader.
