Seven cops injured in mob attack

Seven policemen were injured after being attacked by a mob in the Chhajlate area of Moradabad district on Saturday evening.

Seven policemen were injured after being attacked by a mob in the Chhajlate area of Moradabad district on Saturday evening. The policemen were attacked by locals when they had gone to the spot where a murder had taken place,following a suicide.

ASP (Rural) Dr Arvind,who also sustained injuries,said one Jyoti,24,had committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Changeri village. Her parents and relatives reached the spot,and alleged that the woman took the step after being harassed for dowry by her in-laws.

Following a verbal dual between the two families,Jyotis mother pushed her (Jyotis) mother-in-law,Murti Devi (80),in a fit of rage. Murti Devi died on the spot,following which her family members attacked Jyotis kin,said police. As the Station Officer of the Chhajlate police station and other policemen reached the spot to pacify the situation,locals started pelting stones at them. ASP Arvind and Circle Officer (CO) Yograj Singh rushed to the spot,but were also attacked. Moradabad DIG B P Singh later reached the spot with additional force and the police used canes to disperse the mob.

The bodies had been sent for postmortem late in the evening.
