Glorious past of Lucknow dawns upon morning walkers

The walk down the memory lane expression couldn’t hold truer than the experience of the motley that gathered at Tile Wali Masjid in Old City for Lucknow Heritage Walk that was inaugurated on Sunday by Tourism Minister Vinod Singh. It was a win-win situation for the participants as their loss of calories was countered by gain of knowledge about little known aspects of the Avadh architecture, culture and nomenclature and about

The crowd began to walk from the monumental masjid, passed through the Bada Imam Bara, halted at Khunkhunji Kothi,a 90-year-old relic, before entering into the maze of bylanes on the other side of the Gol Darwaza.

“The idea is to instill pride among citizens for the legacy for not only buildings that have withstood the ravages of time, but also the lesser known nooks and corners and the delights tucked in them,” said Debashish Nayak, founder of the Heritage Walk movement that has been a success in cities beginning from Kolkata to Ahmedabad.

As a proof of his claim, local tourist guide Naved Zia walked ahead of the crowd led by the minister and secretary Tourism and spoke through a microphone about the story behind every building they passed by. The attention of the morning walkers was drawn to the art deco and staccato styles of architecture, the twin-fish motif at the entrance of all the old havelis, the heavyset latches on the massive wooden doors, etc. The spots visited included Farangi Mahal, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed for a couple of days in 1922 and which is a great seat of learning as in the foundation of Madrasa-e-Nizamia and the cradle of the Khilafat Movement and the tomb of Mir Anees, the poet laureate of Avadh.

Calories lost in the walk were nominally regained as the crowd was treated to a kachori-jalebi breakfast at the shops vending out the savouries since ages. A perfumer welcomed all with cotton buds soaked in itr to be tucked into the crevices of the ear, while an Ayurvedic doctor in the Nepali Kothi area of Chowk brought out bags of saffron and musk for everyone to take a whiff off.

“The guides will be available round the year to take natives as well as tourists around on this guided tour at a nominal fee of Rs 10 per person,” says Debashish, expressing hope that the tour would prove to be the saviour for many a crumbling structure through sheer awareness.
