Police said prima facie it appeared to be a case of attempted loot that failed to succeed.
A 25-year-old nephew of a Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) office-bearer was shot dead and an alleged criminal killed in firing that took place at his residence early Thursday at Karari in Kaushambi district.
Police said prima facie it appeared to be a case of attempted loot that failed to succeed. However, citing old enmity, the brother of the deceased — Bablu Chowdhary — has lodged a complaint with the police naming five persons.
The house of Suresh Nagar Chowdhary, Kashi Prant chief of Sangharsh Vahini — associated with Kashi Prant unit of RSS wing Swadeshi Jagran Manch — is located nearly 500 metres from the Karari police station. The outer part of the house has a shop named Veer Bhadra Jewelers. At the time of the incident, Suresh was not present in the house.

Past midnight, nearly half-a-dozen armed men allegedly tried to enter the house. As Bablu Chowdhary tried to shut the gate, the assailants opened fire. Bablu was shot in his chest and died on the spot. In the meantime, his cousin Monu (son of Suresh’s sister) — who too was present on the spot — identified one of the assailants as Chuppa Pasi.
“As firing continued, Pasi tried to lunged towards Monu to catch him — he had realised that he has been identified — and was shot. The bullet pierced his chest and he too died on the spot. The assailants then beat a retreat,” said Kaushambi ASP O P Pandey.
Pandey added that, prima facie, it appeared that the assailants wanted to loot the jewellery shop. “However, they could not break the locks of the shop and decided to attack the residents of the house. So far, the motive of loot seems possible. But further investigations are required to ascertain facts,” he said.
Circle Officer (Manjhanpur) Purnendu Singh said: “The vehicle on which the assailants arrived and fled is yet to be identified. They were firing and taking cover beside the Bolero belonging to Chowdhary.”
Investigations revealed that Chhupa Pasi used to live barely a kilometre away from Bablu Chowdhary’s house. He was named in a case of rape, registered against him in 2008, in which he also went to jail.
Meanwhile, an FIR of attempted dacoity and murder was lodged on the complaint of Vinod Chowdhary — brother of Bablu. “The FIR names five persons, including one Anil Singh, a resident of the same area. It apparently mentions some old enmity, but we are yet to go through the details, as we are busy with the postmortem and cremation of the deceased,” said Karari Station Officer Dhananjay Verma.
