AMU Professor likes to paint the world as it is

Paintings by Badar Jahan,Assistant Professor Fine Arts,Aligarh Muslim University are not landscapes, portraits and patterns. “I like to depict the human side of disasters like war and terror attacks, the difference they make to lives of those who lose their kin and the dilemma of those who become victims of malignant propaganda,” says the artist, whose work is on display till April 11 at the Rashtriya Lalit Kala Akademi,Ekta Vihar,Aliganj.

Her paintings titled Lost,Displaced and Here comment on how catastrophes make us immune and gradually indifferent to the plight of fellow human beings. “Every time there is a happening like the 26/11 terror attack,or the recent attack on CRPF jawans by Naxals,my heart goes out to the kin of the victim and I push my message of world peace through the portrayal of their predicament,” says the artist, who uses oil paints and mixed media to etch her muse on canvas. Also on display are some compelling paintings like Rhythm that capture the eclectic patterns of life.

Badar Jahan received the State Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1999 and has authored a book titled Abstraction in Indian Painting: Post Independence Era (Kaveri Publications).
