Newbies’ Break

You would consider the film debut of the ward of a top producer as the most obvious thing to happen, but Zoa,daughter of Karim Morani, begs to differ. “I kept pleading dad to put in a word for me…in so many auditions I was rejected, till they found me right for this role,” she says about landing a part in the Shahrukh Khan production Always Kabhi Kabhi, for the premier of which she was in Lucknow along with co-actors. “I assisted in directing Om Shanti Om for the same production house and that was more a stepping stone than dad’s credentials,” said Zoa,keeping at bay queries on personal crisis ensuing from Morani’s arrest.

“I had been doing theatre in Mumbai and Raju Hirani (director of the Munnabhai series and 3 Idiots) had seen me in some play. He auditioned and found me right for the role of the glum engineering student who eventually hangs himself in 3 Idiots. That 3-minute part got me ample attention and next came this film, shot in La Martiniere College,Lucknow,my alma mater,” says Ali Fazal, who is reading a lot of scripts and was unruffled by the thumbs-down given by audience and critics to the school romance. “It’s not my marks sheet…I am only a part of the film. Whether it does well or not,I need to move on.”

But rank newcomer Satyajeet Dubey’s story could inspire many starry-eyed. “I belong to Bilaspur, from where I passed class XII and right after decided to move to Mumbai for a career in acting. I knew the cousin of an acquaintance with whom I shared his PG accommodation and kept meeting around. I got work as backstage help for the Mumbai Theatre Group. Meanwhile,I did some TV commercials for Reliance Big Magic,KitKat,HDFC and was spotted by the film’s casting director.

Following the audition,I was found right to play Tariq,my character in the film. I contributed as a technical help on the floors too,” beams Dubey.

It is Giselle Monteiro’s second outing after Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal which was not as successful as his Jab We Met. “They wanted me to play Saif’s American girlfriend but Imtiaz felt my looks were Indian and cast me as the Punjabi beloved of the hero,” says the 6-ft tall model from Espirito Santo,Brazil. “I was busy modelling and my agent Anaida had been engaged by Imtiaz for the styling of his film.

She introduced me to the director and I was in. I am loving the Indian experience, though I rue not being able to say my lines because of my poor Hindi,” who completes the teenie quartet in the school flick.
