A series of reverses in the Supreme Court and on the political front over the last two months has unnerved the core team of Chief Minister Mayawati’s advisors.

BSP’s dwindling fortunes
A series of reverses in the Supreme Court and on the political front over the last two months has unnerved the core team of Chief Minister Mayawati’s advisors. Now comes the BSP’s dismal show in Maharashtra and Haryana. Also, the FIR against Amar Singh, which was filed by a man who had organised a yagna to make Mayawati prime minister, has become a hot potato. The Kolkata police,to whom the case was sent for investigation, has refused to oblige the state government. The complainant,S K Tripathi, had moved the High Court, requesting it to monitor the probe, but the court dismissed his petition. Much to the chagrin of the BSP top brass,Amar Singh has hit back by lodging a complaint against the Chief Minister, her trusted minister Babu Singh Kushwaha and her secretary Navneet Sehgal, accusing them of misusing government machinery to frame him in false cases. He is said to be planning some “startling disclosure” to embarrass the government. And in what could make matters worse for the CM and her party, the contempt of court case in the Supreme Court, the Taj heritage corridor case and the disproportionate assets case filed by the CBI,are all listed for hearing in the coming month.

Dept on the Titanic trend
The state’s finances are in a bad shape, courtesy the shrinking income and rising expenditure. For the first time in several years, the government failed to disburse bonus to its employees ahead of Diwali. The disbursement of pay revision arrears has also been delayed by a month. The Fifth Floor is keeping a close watch on the financial situation. A senior officer at the CM’s secretariat, not familiar with the jargon of the Finance department, contacted an old friend to know the meaning of an overdraft. The friend tendered the explanation and told the officer that the Reserve Bank of India could put an embargo on the accounts of the state government and freeze all transactions,if an overdraft stands for seven consecutive working days. Following this, the Finance department has been asked to be extra vigilant.

Puri’s double delight
As a loyal BJP man,Tandon may have blessed the candidature of Amit Puri for Lucknow West, but he is keeping away from campaigning for the bypolls. Even as Tandon’s health does not permit such exertions,Puri is well aware of the kind of hold Tandon has in Lucknow West and realises the damage his absence can do to his Vidhan Sabha aspirations. So,Puri has found a way around the problem. He is liberally using Tandon’s photos in all his publicity material,be it campaign vehicles, posters and banners. In the Lok Sabha elections,Tandon himself had liberally used Atal Behari Vajpayee’s photo and appeal in his favour. Puri is using Vajpayee’s photos as well.
A party worker said,“If Atalji’s photos and letters can create magic for Tandon, the combination of Atalji and Tandonji will definitely do it for Amitji.” Let us wait for the election result.

Bureaucrats unwanted
With Wajahat Habibullah deciding to move to Jammu and Kashmir, the post of Chief Central Information Commission has become vacant. Promptly,RTI activists have launched a campaign to pressurise the government to adopt transparency in the selection process. They want the government to advertise for the vacancy and invite candidates from across the country. They do not want bureaucrats for such constitutional offices which are meant to empower the people because, they say, bureaucrats hesitate in taking action against their former colleagues. Instead, they want the government to choose social activists or persons of repute from other walks of life. They are circulating an online petition addressed to the PM. If interested, you can find it at http://www.petitiononline.com/aishu/petition.html.

Sahara charm for cricketers
Sahara India’s decision to support the Uttar Pradesh senior cricket team for the next three years has brought smiles to the faces of state cricketers. Apart from the monetary benefit they would receive, they would also get the opportunity to sport jerseys that bear the Sahara logo like their counterparts in Team India. Tanmay Srivastava, part of the UP senior team, said: “I am excited. I think sporting the same logo that Team India does will be lucky for us.”
