While various rights activists have come forward in support of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Reader Dr S R Siras, who was recently suspended on charges of homosexuality,University Vice-Chancellor Professor P K Abdul Azis has justified the decision.

Speaking to The Indian Express on Sunday, the V-C said AMU could not digest homosexuality and free sex on campus.

“AMU is an institution of international repute and its students go out with a character. Homosexuality is not good for them and such acts could not be allowed on the campus,” said Azis.

The V-C was in Lucknow to attend a meeting at Integral University to finalise the programme of the first meeting of the Aligarh Declaration for UP,which is scheduled for next month.

Dr Siras was placed under suspension on February 10 after a video clip showed him having consensual sex with another man at his official residence allotted in the Medical Colony.

The vice-chancellor,who ordered the suspension, has not yet watched the video.

“I have not watched the video but suspension has been done following the confirmation from the proctorial board that has evidence against Dr Siras,” Professor Azis said.

Last year, the Delhi High Court had struck down the provision of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalised consensual acts of adults in private, holding it as a violation of the fundamental rights of life and liberty and right to equality as guaranteed in the Constitution.

“I do not have much idea about the High Court order. So,I cannot comment on it. But the cottage provided to Dr Siras was not his private property,” added Professor Azis.

According to him,the university would have no objection if any one does such acts outside campus at his private place, but would certainly not tolerate it in university property.

He added that Dr Siras is free to challenge the suspension in any forum. The chargesheet is being prepared against him and a committee will soon be constituted to inquire the charges framed against him, added the vice-chancellor.
