The Allahabad High Court has issued a series of directions to ensure that its campus remains clean and secure, and has sought views of the Bar Associations of the Allahabad High Court, as well as its Lucknow Bench on the directions.
A division bench of Justices Sudhir Agarwal and Suneet Kumar passed the order Thursday while hearing a PIL filed by Deepak Kumar Pandey, a social worker. The matter will come up for hearing on June 30.
The petitioner had pointed out that despite use of tobacco-based products like paan, paan masala and cigarettes being banned in public places, no such provision has been made for the court’s campuses. Apart from affecting the cleanliness, it also damages the public property.
The bench added the security aspect to the issue saying it was necessary for smooth and secure functioning of the court.
The directions issued for the high court and its Lucknow Bench which will be firmed up after taking views of the respective Bar Associations’ views include: no entry to vendors selling tobacco-based products or tea within the campus; ensuring lawyers’ chambers and seats remain clean will be the personal responsibility of the lawyers; fine of Rs 100 on violation of cleanliness norms; immediate installation of adequate number of CCTV cameras in the high court and various district courts; and issuance of ID cards to lawyers and registered and unregistered clerks working with the lawyers.
