A forme inter-university weightlifting champion of Lucknow University was on Tuesday arrested from Gudamba Police station area for allegedly murdering his friend two months back.
According to the police,30-year-old Himanshu Giri,a resident of Allahabad district,strangled his friend Bhanu Pratap Singh,28,on April 28 night on the banks of the Ganga in Allahabad and threw his body into the river.
Bhanus father Shankar Bakhsh Singh had lodged an FIR in Gudamba Police station area on May 16 after Bhanu went missing.
Two years ago,Himanshu,then a student of Lucknow University,had married his senior in the university,Anamika,who later got the job of a teacher in Sitapur. Both started to live in a rented house in Jankipuram area of Lucknow,the police said.
Later,Himanshus friend Bhanu Pratap Singh,a resident of Shivratanganj Police station area of Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar district,came to Lucknow and started to live in a room in the same house. Bhanu started to work as a transporter.
One day,Himanshu allegedly spotted Anamika and Bhanu in compromising situation and decided to kill him. But he continued his friendship with Bhanu.
Anamika and Himanshu often fought over the issue.
On April 27 night,Himanshu asked Bhanu to come to Allahabad with him. Bhanu wanted to borrow money and Himanshu promised him to give the money in Allahabad. On reaching Allahabad next day,they went to bathe in the Ganga and Himanshu gave Bhanu Rs 10,000. They had drinks together. He then strangled Bhanu with a scarf and threw the body in the Ganga.
