(File Photo)An undergraduate student was found dead in her hostel room at Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Women’s College on Saturday, the police said, adding that no suicide note was recovered from the spot.
The police said the deceased, Ruby, is suspected to have died by suicide. They have seized her mobile phone and a personal diary as part of the investigation. Efforts were underway to unlock the mobile phone in the hope of finding clues about the circumstances leading to her death, they said.
Ruby, a native of Moradabad, was a second-year political science student and an active member of the college’s drama club. Her younger brother, Mohammad Kasim, is pursuing a law degree at AMU.
“Ruby’s family reached Aligarh late on Saturday evening and took the body without allowing a postmortem examination,” said Circle Officer Sarvam Singh. He added that the family did not indicate any possible reason behind her taking such an extreme step.
Ruby had last spoken to her brother on Friday, the police said.
AMU Proctor Wasim Ali said the student had gone home and returned to her hostel on the afternoon of October 21. On Saturday, her hostelmates noticed that her room had remained closed since morning and that she had not come to the dining hall for breakfast or lunch. When one of them peeped inside, she found Ruby’s body. The other students immediately informed the authorities and the police.
