Close on the heels of the Centres decision to introduce a constitutional amendment bill for quota in promotions in government jobs for Dalits, state minority welfare minister Azam Khan has demanded that the Congress should also introduce a constitutional amendment for providing reservations to Muslims in government jobs.
Khan, who is touted as the Samajwadi Partys Muslim face, said his demand also has the backing of the SP as the issue of Muslim reservation also figures in the poll manifesto.
Both the cases have a similarity. The reservation in promotions for Dalits was also struck down by the Supreme Court while Muslim reservation too has been rejected by the court. So,when a constitutional amendment bill can be introduced in the first case, then why not for the latter, said Azam on Saturday.
The Supreme Court had on June 14 rejected the Centres proposal to create a 4.5 per cent minority sub-quota within the 27 per cent OBC quota.
Khan also said that Muslims are living in penury and that their condition is worst than Dalits. Even the report of the Sachar committee, which was formed by the Congress, confirms the same. If they fail to act, then it implies that their intentions are not clear and the whole thing is a farce, said Azam Khan.
The senior cabinet minister also clarified that SP is demanding reservation for Muslims in proportion to their population. This demand is based on the findings of Sachar Committee report.
Azam also said that Congress will feel the brunt of cheating Muslims if it fails to bring the constitutional amendment bill in the ongoing Parliament session. The next elections are not far away. If Congress fails to deliver,it should not count Muslim votes.
Azam, however, said that his party will not oppose the constitutional amendment for reservation in promotions for Dalits in government jobs but will not take back its demand for Muslim reservation. Congress is known for its anti-Muslim practices. The recent riots in Assam also show that the party delayed the movement of Army.
Taking a dig at Dalit leaders,he said: When Barabanki MP P L Punia who is a retired IAS officer and his sons are also officers is interested in reservation in promotion then I have all the right to demand Muslim reservation for my community.
The ruling party had assured reservation to Muslims during its election campaign. While sharing stage with SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav at an election rally on January 7,Azam had announced that the state government will ensure that Muslims get reservations in government jobs.
