Even as Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was busy leading a dharna outside Parliament against the alleged coal allocation scam, his son Akhilesh Yadav,Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, wrote two letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today.
While one letter demanded allocation of coal linkage to the proposed Harduaganj Extension thermal power generation project, another letter requested his intervention to speed up execution of power generation projects by Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL),which have already been delayed.
Akhilesh requested the Prime Minister to intervene in granting coal linkage to the 660 MW unit of Harduaganj extension thermal power project, which has been pending for a long time. The coal linkage for the project was applied for in September 2009 by UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd,which also pursued the matter with the Union coal ministry as well as Central Electricity Authority, but without any success.
At present, the linkage is pending following pending environment clearance from the ministry of environment and forests. The CM requested the Prime Minister to intervene and ask the Union coal ministry to expedite the matter soon.
In an another letter,Akhilesh pointed out neglect on the part of BHEL in completing projects allocated to it in the state. In Uttar Pradesh,BHEL has been given power projects like 500 MW extension of Harduaganj power plant,500 MW extension of Parichha power plant and also 1000 MW Anpara – D project. The Chief Minister informed the Prime Minister that the deadline for commissioning 1000 MW Anpara-D power plant was July 2011 but the project is still pending.
Apart from these units,BHEL has also been given work for refurbishment and modernisation of five units of 200 MW each at Obra-B plant,100 MW unit at Obra and 100 MW unit at Harduaganj. BHEL was tasked with upgradation and maintenance of these units. However,in his letter, the chief minister said that especially in case of Obra-B plant, the refurbishment had to be completed by 2008 but has been delayed.
