Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is likely to scrap Special Investigation Team (SIT),which was constituted during the Mayawati regime.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) claimed that SIT did not serve any purpose and it was formed only to oblige the favourite police officers of Mayawati. It is true that the CM is seriously contemplating scrapping SIT. There is no use of it when already specialised agencies like EOW,Vigilance and Anti-Corruption exists in the state. The police officers deputed in SIT did not do anything worthwhile and just took at their salary and perks, said party spokesperson,Rajendra Choudhary.
He claimed that the SIT was an apt example of how the BSP government squandered public money.
The SIT was constituted on June 16,2007 by the BSP government as a multi-disciplinary investigating agency, which can effectively enquire and investigate cases relating to influential persons and public servants who misuse their high position or connection and indulge in commission of irregularities of serious nature and economic offences. It is headed by an ADG rank official with A L Bannerjee being its last head.
At present,no ADG has been assigned the responsibility of SIT. The agency was handed over the task of investigating the multi-crore foodgrain scam and UPSIDC scam.
SP believes in effective policing and maintaining law and order is our top priority. Akhilesh has given instructions in this regard. It has been categorically mentioned that small incidents will not be overlooked as they may culminate in big issues, added Choudhary.
