The four-storied Dockyard Road building,which collapsed on Friday morning,had been declared as dangerous to live in by the municipal corporation.
At an emergency review meeting undertaken by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in light of the incident,additional municipal commissioner Rajeev Jalota informed Chavan that building had been identified as dangerous and was tagged in the C-2 category of dangerous buildings.
The civic body identifies buildings which are dilapidated but not extremely dangerous. The building was constructed in 1980.
During the meeting,Chavan asked senior officials to expedite relief and rescuer work. Terming the incident as unfortunate,Chavan directed agencies concerned to pitch in the relief operations.
Besides BMC officials and the Mumbai fire brigade,65 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force and Thane fire brigade was helping out with the rescue work. Four ambulances,12 fire engines,and two rescue vans were pressed into service.
Students from the KC College and personnel from the Mazgaon docks civil defense force were also helping in the work.
Chavan has also interacted with medics of the Sir JJ hospital,where most of the injured were admitted. The chief minister was expected to visit the spot in the afternoon.
