West Bengal: will move HC if govt does not permit rath yatras, says state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh

The first rath yatra will be taken out on December 5 by BJP national president Amit Shah, from Tatapith, Birbhum. The second one will be taken out from Cooch Behar district on December 7, while the third one will be taken out from Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas on December 9.

The BJP is contemplating moving Calcutta High Court if the state government does not provide it permission to organise three ‘rath yatras’ to kick off its campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections across West Bengal in December.

State BJP chief Dilip Ghosh on Monday said they had informed the government about their yatra itinerary. “We had sought their time to talk about it, but they have turned us down. So we are contemplating moving court if they do not provide us permissions,” Ghosh told reporters.

The first rath yatra will be taken out on December 5 by BJP national president Amit Shah, from Tatapith, Birbhum. The second one will be taken out from Cooch Behar district on December 7, while the third one will be taken out from Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas on December 9.

“The state government and ruling Trinamool Congress have become nervous because we have decided to take out rath yatyas in Bengal. If we are stopped, then we will be forced to move the Calcutta High Court. We have already prepared our documents to submit in court,” Ghosh said, adding that they had to do the same thing on a previous occasion when they wanted to hold a rally in Kolkata.

The rath yatras, aimed at “restoring democracy”, will cover all 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Meanwhile, Ghosh also inducted Forward Bloc leaders and advocates Piyali Paul and Uma Shankar Roy into the party Monday. “They (BJP) are not in the people’s court and that’s why they are going to high court. They must understand that they cannot gain enough ground in Bengal by organising rath yatras,” said TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also took a dig at BJP’s proposed rath yatras in Kolkata on Monday. “They are talking of rath yatra. These raths have all five-star luxuries. All show-off. Earlier they used to seek votes in the name of Ram,” she said.
