After paying floral tribute to the victims in Bogtui, Adhikari said the Trinamool Congress has betrayed the trust of the minorities in the state. (Express Photo)LEADER OF Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for “failing to pay tribute” to the people who were killed in Birbhum district’s Bogtui a year ago.
A total of 10 persons were charred to death on the intervening night of March 21 and 22 last year after several houses were set on fire in retaliation for the killing of a deputy chief of a Trinamul-run gram panchayat.
Tuesday marked a year since the massacre and political parties made a beeline to Bogtui to reach out to the family of the victims.
After paying floral tribute to the victims in Bogtui, Adhikari said the Trinamool Congress has betrayed the trust of the minorities in the state.
“The BJP had come here even a year ago. Today we have come here again on humanitarian grounds. This has nothing to do with politics. The TMC was responsible for this incident. The BJP had no standing in Bogtui. In 2021 Assembly polls, we got only 17 votes from here. But today people are showing support to us. We will fight this legally and stand with the victim families with all our resources,” said Adhikari.
Targeting Banerjee for not mentioning Bogtui today, the BJP MLA said, “Mamata Banerjee met journalists twice today, once at the airport and then in Bhubaneswar. She didn’t mention Bogtui even once in either of the interactions. The aunt-nephew didn’t mention Bogtui in any of their social media posts. But TMC cadres are creating hype for Mamata Banerjee. This is unfortunate. The TMC has betrayed the trust of the people in Bogtui and especially the minorities.”
Meanwhile, the TMC too reached out to the family of the victims. TMC leaders Chandranath Sinha and Asish Bandopadhyay reached Bogtui and paid tribute to the victims at the martyrs’ platform. However, Bandyopadhyay was not allowed to enter the house of one of the victims. Speaking to reporters after being stopped from entering the house, the TMC MLA said, “The people have every right to vent their anger if there is any. A CBI probe was going on. Therefore, I did not come here before as it might jeopardise the investigation process. Certainly, some people are angry with us.”
Meanwhile, the CPM and Congress held a silent rally in Bogtui in memory of the victims.
