A man beat up MLA Sushanta Ghosh with a slipper on Tuesday while he was coming out of the court.

The Garbeta MLA had appeared before the Fourth Additional Session Judge Avijit Som when the assailant, later identified as Shyamapada Kundu,a resident of Amlapara,Garbeta hit him from behind with his slippers. He hit Ghosh thrice before officials of Kotwali Police Station intervened and took him away. Ghosh was there according to a scheduled production in compliance with a previous court order.

The beating up was accompanied with a skeleton dance to symbolise Ghosh’s alleged complicity in the human skeleton case,in which human graves were recovered from close to his ancestral house at Benachapra village under Garbeta Assembly constituency in West Midnapore district in June last year, after the Trinamool Congress came to power.

Public prosecutors said it was a sad incident that took place within the court premises. The next hearing of Ghosh is scheduled on March 16. He complained about the lack of security provided to him. “I had requested the DG and the Speaker for adequate security, but enough arrangement was not made. The state government wants these attacks on me,” Ghosh said.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose said,“We do not understand how this can happen within the court. As the sitting MLA,he has not been given adequate security. The present government is a complete failure as far as maintaining law and order is concerned. We condemn this act and demand punishment for the offenders.”

Shyamapada Kundu was previously a BJP supporter, who later joined the TMC. Relatives of Kundu said he was under a lot of stress. “Shyamapada’s children could not be admitted to any school of the area because of Sushanta Ghosh’s instructions. For the last five years, the kids have forgone studies and work in a tea shop,” said Bachhu Kumar,a neighbour of Shyamapada.
