Separate cells for Kamduni rape accused

A fast track court Tuesday directed the Dumdum central jail authority that the eight accused in the Kamduni rape case be confined in separate cells and other inmates not be allowed to interact with them. Earlier in the day,advocate Firoze Edulji,the counsel for the accused,argued that the counsel of the victim’s family had no right to argue during the criminal proceedings. The fact track court would hear the arguments Friday.

TMC men behind attack on old man: SP

The Kolkata police Tuesday confirmed that four Trinamool Congress men had attacked Sukdebpur resident Lalit Mohan Mondal on June 26,but said it could not be ascertained whether any top ruling party leaders had masterminded it. Pravin Tripathy,SP South 24 Parganas,submitted the reply to a petition filed by Mondal in the Calcutta High Court alleging that he was attacked at his residence by TMC men and that the police had failed to arrest the accused. PIL for forces for civic polls dismissed

The Calcutta High Court Tuesday dismissed a PIL seeking deployment of central forces for free and fair municipal elections to be held in 12 municipalities on September 21. A division bench of Chief Justice Arun Mishra dismissed the plea filed by advocate Basabi Raichudury,saying the PIL was not maintainable.

Seven killed,56 hurts as bus overturns

Seven passengers were killed and 56 others injured when an overloaded bus overturned at Panagarh in Bardhaman district Tuesday,police said.While three persons died on the spot,four succumbed to injuries at Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital,superintendent of police Syed Mohammad H Mirza said.
