Though the city is no stranger to world cinema, international film festivals are always more than welcome here.

Though the city is no stranger to world cinema, international film festivals are always more than welcome here. The Spanish Film Festival organized by the UTV World Movies at Nandan comes as a pleasant add-on to this season of Bollywood and Hollywood blockbusters. As a part of an effort to promote World Cinema through screenings and tie-ups with culture groups, the channel has brought to the city an interesting line-up of Spanish films of our times. Ranging from drama, romance, biopics to dark thrillers, the festival has packed in quite a cinematic punch.

The festival opens with a 2004 Miguel Bardem film Incautos. It is about the protagonist,Ernesto an orphan who grew up to become a swindler. At an age when the body screams for rest,Ernesto is offered a swindle assignment which is going to make life a lot easier than he could ever dream of.

Iberia,a 2005 Carlos Saura film, and includes dance forms and music to churn out a visually riveting work of cinema. It makes use of classical ballet, contemporary ballet,Spanish dance and flamenco extensively in course of the story. Cleopatra is again about an aged schoolteacher who supports an unemployed, self piteous husband and her friendship with a soap star, with whom she embarks on a road trip. Other films being screened include The Art of Losing,Oculto,Nobody’s Perfect,Unconscious and The Two Tough Guys.

The festival, that has brought to the city around eight films indicates that the city is waking up to world cinema with renewed vigour. Another proof of the same being the world cinema evenings organized at Roxy at The Park.

The festival starts from July 21 and goes on till July 24. Entry at Nandan is free
