A day after the state government gave its nod to the proposal of upgrading Presidency College into a university, there was an atmosphere of jubilation at the college today.

University status was the subject of discussion everywhere — at the college union room, college portico and in classrooms. During class breaks students were seen writing posters on the college wall hailing the new development.

“It is a historic moment for the institution. We,as students, are proud of it,” said Richa Gupta, general secretary of the college union.

Students were, meanwhile, keen to know more about the university status. “We want to know the contents of the bill — whether the students at the institution will have necessary representation at the university,” said Chhandak Chaterjee,a student and supporter of Independent’s Consolidation (IC) at the college.

Students belonging to the (IC) wore badges saying ‘Presidency one step forward’ to mark the proposed upgradation of the college to a university.
