Now,north braces for rain onslaught

While the flood-like condition has improved in the Gangetic plains with the area receiving moderate shower,bringing some relief to the people,the Met Department has made the forecast of heavy rainfall in north Bengal districts.

The regional weather department at Alipore has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Darjeeling,Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri districts in north Bengal,which may affect people in the region.

Meanwhile,two more persons died in rain-related incident taking the total toll to 29. Approximately 26 lakh people have been affected in 208 blocks and 60 municipalities across 14 districts of the state with nearly 1,66,219 houses damaged in the week-long rains.

Irrigation Secretary Anjan Chatterjee said some major rivers were still flowing above the danger mark and district administrations have been asked to keep relief and rescue teams ready in case of breaches.

Breaches in embankments were being repaired by engineers of the Irrigation Department,Chatterjee said. Briefing the Assembly about the flood situation,Irrigation Minister Manas Bhunia said severe damages have been caused due to the incessant rains and major breach in embankments.

“Several areas include Haripal,Pursurah,Khanaku,Singur and Polba in Hooghly district and Udyanaryanpur ,Amta ,Bagnan ,Shyampur blocks in Howrah district have been terrible affected due to ingress of flood water from Damodar “,said Bhunia.

On Wednesday,DVC officials said they have released 85,000 cusecs of water from Maithon and Panchet reservoirs. They said that Durgapur barrage has released 90,000 cusecs and Kangsaboti barrage another 15,000 cusecs of water. But,the officials added,the amount of water released is being gradually reduced.
