A mathematics teacher pays tribute to singer Shamshad Begum through a book
From 2001 to 2008,Chandrakant Mohanlal would wake up at 4 am,head to Chor Bazaar in Mumbai and buy records of Hindi film songs. Sometimes, the Mumbai resident would travel all the way to Surat in Gujarat where he would source more records. Back home in his flat in Ramabai Marg, the 77-year-old would go through his purchases, ears peeled only for one voice,Shamshad Begums. His labour of love has emerged as a book called Khanakti Aawaaz, which contains all the 1,600 songs the playback singer has ever recorded.
Mohanlal was a teacher of mathematics at Holkar College,Indore, until his love for music made him a full-time researcher of Shamshad Begums music. Sometimes,I would have to listen to every single record I bought to identify her voice, especially when she sang bhajans. Theyd change her name to Radha Rani,so that it would not anger anybody that a Muslim woman had sung a Hindu bhajan, says Mohanlal who journeyed to Lahores Lohar Mandi where a part of Begums family still lives.
The book is self-published and though Mohanlal has no experience in publishing,it has been carefully produced to rank as a collectors item. Begums illustrious career has been divided into several categories and each song is mentioned with the details of her co-singer,music composer, film and even recording dates and numbers.
These days, songs are meant to be viewed, not heard and what moves me each time I listen to Begums voice is how flawlessly she sang in those days and with such emotion, smiles Mohanlal whose favourite songs are Mere Nindon Mein Tum from Naya Andaaz and Jaan Tham Le from Shehenshah.
The book is priced at Rs 850 and can be purchased from Mohanlal. Contact: 09819883628
