Mob attacks cops over robbery

Accusing the police of ineffectiveness,angry villagers attacked policemen in Bankura district’s Gangajalghati on Saturday following a series of thefts that had taken place on Friday night.

Accusing the police of ineffectiveness,angry villagers attacked policemen in Bankura district’s Gangajalghati on Saturday following a series of thefts that had taken place on Friday night. Seven persons have been arrested in connection to the incident,said a police source.

Over 20 villagers,along with private cars carrying marriage parties,were robbed at Kalgara. Alleging that the police did not rush to the spot after the incidents,the locals blocked a road to protest against the role of the police. When the policemen tried to end the blockade,the villagers pelted stones and set a police jeep on fire. Following this,a large number policemen rushed to the spot,who allegedly opened fire. One villagers was injured in the firing,said a villager. Vishal Garg,the SP,however,denied that the police had opened fire. Saying that he was waiting for the local police station for details into the incident,he said: “Police picket has been set up in the area after the incident.The situation is under control now.”
