With as many as 56 killings reported in four police stations of Raina,Mangolkot,Ketugram and Bhatar in Burdwan district in the past one year, these areas, once considered a red citadel, have turned out to be a political hotbed and the Trinamool Congress is making a desperate bid to make inroads in the CPM rank and file in the area.
It largely explains why Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is keen to hold a rally in Raina tomorrow. Two TMC supporters were shot dead by the police this week at Raina after they allegedly attacked a police party which had gone to a village in the area to pick up some wanted criminals.
The Trinamool leaders, however, refuted the police claims and charged that the police, headed by the Superintendent of Police,Burdwan had been acting at the behest of the CPM leaders and shot dead two TMC men. An administrative inquiry has begun into the police firing.
As a fallout of the incident,Rajashekharan,Burdwan SP,has been transferred to state police administration, said sources. He was allegedly CPM’s most trusted officer against whom Mamata had publicly raised allegations of bias.
According to sources, sensing the change in political equations in the state,Rajashekharan had applied for Central deputation. However,he was not being released by senior CPM leaders. However,a couple of days ago,he has been given the release order and is soon expected to move to Delhi on Central deputation.
Swapan Debnath,Trinamool’s district leader, said,”After the Parliamentary elections, around 39 TMC workers were killed in the district, both by the CPM cadres and the police. In the last one year,we had to face inhuman torture by CPM cadres and police. They looted our houses and set them on fire. We could not even think of contesting in the panchayat and district-level elections. We could not put up any candidate in panchayat polls in the last 10 years.”
However,Amal Haldar, the CPM district committee secretary, said,”The TMC’s claim is completely false. We can produce documents that show they have killed 17 members of our party. But they cannot produce any document. The TMC does not have any base here. They are trying to get a foothold in the area by terrorising the villagers, but they have failed in their efforts.”
