Mamata pricks ally Cong again

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday took another potshot at ally Congress party saying it could alone never have brought “change” in the government.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday took another potshot at ally Congress party saying it could alone never have brought “change” in the government.

In an interview to three local Bengali television channels, the Trinamool Congress chief said: “Had there been Congress alone here there would not have been any change in the government. In fact it is the Trinamool Congress which brought the ‘change’. But we are in an alliance and we want to maintain that even though we have a two-thirds majority in the Assembly,’’ Banerjee said.

Banerjee’s remarks come close in the heels of senior Congress leader and Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh who had asserted that Congress played a big role in bringing the end of the Left’s rule in Bengal.

The chief minister also alleged that the Centre had not rendered any financial assistance to the state for the last eight months since she came to power. “But we are not beggars. People are watching everything and they will give the right answer in time,’’ Banerjee said.

Describing the situation at Manipur where she went for election campaign. Banerjee said it was like a battle ground. “There are shoot at sight orders (at some places). Gas cylinders sell at the cost of Rs 1,800 per cylinder. It’s a horrible situation there. We have fielded candidates there. We have also fielded candidates in states like Goa and Uttar Pradesh. We want to fan out all over India,’’ she added.

Recounting the success of her government since it had come to power eight months ago,the chief minister said she has been able to bring peace back to Junglemahal and Darjeeling. “We are setting up seven health districts. We are also setting up IITs and polytechnics. We have started developmental work on several other fronts,’’ the chief minister said.

Commenting on her saddest moment and her happiest moment since she became chief minister,Banerjee said it was the AMRI fire incident that saddened her most. “So many people died in a helpless way”,she said.

“I felt very happy when Manna Dey was given Banga Bibhushan award. His eyes were moist and said that he never got such an honour before in this state. Gitoshri Sandhya Mukherjee also expressed the same sentiments,’’ Banerjee added.
