The Left is set to make an issue out of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s letter to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, with Front partner Forward Bloc demanding the minister’s removal from the Union Cabinet.

Following the two-day central executive committee meeting,Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas said the PM should explain whether it was the Centre’s decision to interfere with the state government’s domain. Moreover the language Chidambaram used is also unacceptable.

“Either you (the Prime Minister) explain the stand of the Central government,or sack him (Chidambaram) immediately,” said Biswas on Wednesday. “The offense the Home minister has committed is more dangerous than the offense former telecommunication minister A Raja committed in 2G Spectrum scam.” Biswas virtually lambasted Chidambaram for using “unconstitutional” words in the letter. He said Chidambaram has crossed his limits of Constitution.

“When you (Chidambaram) are a lawyer, you can be appointed as a counsel for saint or a dacoit, but sitting in the chair of the Home minister you should follow the directive of the Constitution. You should avoid advocating for political party,” said Biswas. He said he will discuss the issue with senior leaders of other three Left parties, including Prakash Karat.

The CPM leaders in Kolkata have hinted that they were not consulted before the demand was announced, but they did not rule out the possibility of all Left parties uniting on the issue.

“Tthe Left leaders in Delhi can finalise whether this will be a common demand,” said CPM spokesman Md. Selim. The CPM state secretary Biman Bose, meanwhile, alleged that Union home minister has copied the language from the Trinamool memorandum. “This is uncalled for,” he said. “No government dignitary can use such language in official communication. This will harm the principles of our federal fabric.”
