Around 5,000 Trinamool Congress supporters led by disgruntled party leader Mohit Ghati are expected to join the Congress during a party gathering in Panchla,Howrah,on July 11.
Ghati, who was with the Trinamool right from the partys inception, had expected a ticket in the last Assembly election. When he was refused,he contested the election as an independent candidate. Later he was expelled from the Trinamool, though there was no written communication in this regard.
I was only verbally told by Mukul Roy that I was no longer wanted in the party. But I liked the spirit of the party and stuck to it. Later I found that there was no way one could voice his opinion in the party or work towards development. I have decided now that I will return to the Congress, the party I once belonged to. It will be more of a homecoming for me, he said.
Ghati said that the decision-making power in the party only depended on the whims and fancies of the party chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
I have written to minister Arup Roy about my decision and he has expressed his grief that I am leaving Trinamool, Ghati said.
Minister Arup Roy,however, said he did not receive any letter. Ghati had called me up to tell me that he was quitting, but whether or not 5,000 more will follow suit remains to be seen, he said.
West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Pradeep Bhattacharya said he had heard about it and would be present at the gathering in the run-up to the panchayat polls.
